Hi Darlene,

Good question. It really depends on your state's guidlines, but I can tell you in general they look at what similar in-home care services in your area would charge. But it's important to note that in most cases, you may need a care contract because the law alot of times presumes that if you provide care as a family member-that you do so without expectation of being compensated. Care contracts are written agreements between you and your loved one outlining what services you will provide and at what cost. These are very complex however so you'll want to make sure you explore the right way to do it.

Hi,

That's great that you found another home. I understand-that's very hard to break that kind of news. In my experience it's really best to just be honest but compassionate about the situation and let them know why you are doing it, why its necessary and reassure her she won't be abandoned and you will be around to visit as often as possible.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your Aunt's situation. Unfortunately, nursing homes are free to require payment privately until Medicaid kicks in. Medicaid will then typically reimburse you, sometimes as much as 3 months. Try to find a "Medicaid Pending" nursing home that will allow her to stay for free knowing that they will be reimbursed by Medicaid. There are nursing homes that operate on this arrangement. As far as the new application, yes, a new nursing home Medicaid application is typically required, because the assistance provided, and some of the requirements are different. Good luck to you!

I'm very sorry to hear about your husband passing. Yes, the VA benefit is something that not too many people know about and it can really help offset some costs. I'll be providing more instruction on the VA benefit in the next month or so.

You have to be very careful about using any trust for VA benefits. While use of a trust may qualify you immediately for VA benefits, it could very easily disqualify you from receiving Medicaid benefits down the line. You must coordinate the two benefits. Most people who receive VA benefits go on to need skilled nursing care within 2-3 years and will need Medicaid. An irrevocable trust may very well qualify you for VA, but unless you have at least 5 years to wait before applying for Medicaid, such a trust can disqualify you.

I wish I would have known more about this last summer, I placed my husband in a nursing home that took veterans as long as he was on Hospice too.
I really don't know what the VA did besides providing his med's which they were doing anyway.
He passed in October.
